Cultural competence is the skill to interact successfully with people of different backgrounds. Worldwide, approximately 129 million people are of Japanese descent; of these, approximately 125 million are residents of Japan.

While making this app students learned to build a fully functional app, gained a deeper understanding of programming language, and familiarized themselves with code and the integrated development environment (IDE). The team also created and curated the app’s content and finally launched and marketed it to the public!

New York City (Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Bronx) is the first area to experience the restaurant mapping feature but we plan on expanding to places like Seattle, San Francisco, and Philly in the future.

No restaurant mapping near you? You can still enjoy our ingredient introductions with cultural sips from anywhere on the globe!

“I am pleased to be able to unite students from varied international gastronomic backgrounds with a talented tech team all wrapped in a culturally competent bow.” Says International Foods Professor and Creative Director of Tasty Bytes Magazine, Gina Keatley. “This app fills a need for the user as well as its creators. It’s exciting to find new ways to encourage diverse foods in an optimistic, appetizing and tech friendly way.”
